A Seduction at Christmas
Seduction and Scandals Series

by Cathy Maxwell

Fiona Lachlan, the daughter of a magistrate, is out-of-work.  Desperate, she agrees to help a courtesan teach an ex-lover a lesson for only twenty pounds.  Fiona enters a private room at The Swan's Nest to find not the ex-lover, but Dominic Lynsted, the Duke of Holburn and the only man to interest Fiona since she was raped by soldiers who were searching for her rebel brother.

Nick Lynsted has searched for Andres Ramingo, the man who betrayed his friendship years before in Greece.  After a night of drunken debauchery, Nick awakened in the ruins of Delphi to find Andres and his signet ring gone. The ring was a priceless gift to his family from Charles II.  When Nick searched the ruins, he met an oracle who warned, "Beware innocence."

For nine years, Nick has heeded the oracle’s advice and avoided romantic entanglements, his only goal to recover his signet ring.  He receives word that Andres will meet him at The Swans Nest. A beautiful woman enters instead, one bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Delphi oracle.

Suddenly, men break into the room, intent on murder, Fiona and Nick escape to her home. The men follow and, wanting to protect Fiona, Nick takes her to his residence in Kent.  Nick soon learns that Fiona is not only beautiful, but intelligent as well.  Even so, he has no desire to repeat the unhappy marriage of his father.

Someone fires a gun at Nick while he and Fiona are out riding and, immediately thereafter, Andres appears.   When Andres swears he did not shoot at Nick, nor steal the signet ring, Nick believes him.

But Fiona poses a question for which Nick has no answer: Who would benefit the most by his death?

A Seduction at Christmas is an exciting, fast-paced romance combined with an intriguing mystery.  The attraction between Nick and Fiona is strong, but Fiona believes she is unsuited for marriage due to her previous rape, and Nick is intent on heeding the oracle’s warning.  Even so, the passionate romance between these two characters is undeniable, emotionally charged and thoroughly believable.  Add a touch of the supernatural and a surprise ending, and the result is a thoroughly enjoyable read.
