Seduction of a Proper Gentleman
Last Man Standing series (fourth of four books)

by Victoria Alexander

Kathleen MacDavid is an intelligent woman who doesn’t believe in magic, unlike her aunt, Lady Hannah Fitzgivens, or her grandmother, the Countess of Dumleavy of Scotland.  Years before, two feuding English and Scottish border families meant to end their violence via marriage, but when the ceremony didn’t occur, an old woman cast a curse: if the two families don’t join in marriage before the autumnal equinox within 500 years, they will perish.

It’s now 1864, 500 years later, and Kathleen has reason to believe the curse.  Her husband, parents and other members of her family suffered early deaths; other family members have been childless.  As the last of the Scottish line, Kathleen must marry Oliver Leighton, the Earl of Norcroft, and last heir of the English family.

When Hannah and Kathleen arrive in London from Scotland, they learn that Oliver is leaving for his country estate. They follow by train but, unbeknownst to Elizabeth, Hannah casts a spell and delivers the unconscious Elizabeth to Oliver’s estate, Norcroft Manor, claiming the young woman fell while disembarking the train.  Hannah adds that the young woman possessed an empty envelope with Lady Edwina Norcroft’s name on it, obviously meaning to visit Edwina.  Although Oliver is suspicious of the two women, his mother Edwina believes Hannah’s story and insists the young female remain with them, while Hannah departs to visit a nearby friend.

When Kathleen awakens, she can't remember her name, but agrees to the use of Kate. Over the course of the next few days, Oliver catches glimpses of fear and frustration in Kate’s eyes and realizes her amnesia is real. He also recognizes that Kate is a woman he wants to pursue and prays that she is not already married.  That feeling is reciprocated as Kate begins to recall her past and realizes her growing love for Oliver.

Seduction of a Proper Gentleman is a wonderful, heartwarming and funny story of love and family.  The characters are adorable and sensitively drawn.  The dialogue between Oliver and Kathleen, and the elderly Edwina, is filled with witty repartee that kept me laughing. But most of all, Oliver and Kathleen’s story is one of the true magic of hope — and love.  A definite keeper!
