Surrender to Me
by Sophie Jordan
Abandoned by her criminal husband, Lady Astrid Derring of London faces the condescending glances from other ladies
of the ton, wears borrowed dresses, and suffers near-constant hunger pangs from having to share her meager food
portions with her few remaining servants. Her shame sinks to new depths when she gets word that her estranged, but
still legally bound, husband is planning to remarry - to a woman in Scotland.
Partly seeking vengeance against him and partly trying to save another young woman from enduring what she did,
Astrid sets off in a borrowed carriage for Scotland to warn the other woman and stop the wedding before it’s too
late. When ruthless brutes in Scotland attack her carriage and try to force themselves upon her and her servant
girl, a handsome man, Griffin Shaw, suddenly appears to help the ladies in distress. In coming to their rescue,
Griffin endures a violent blow to the head and Astrid, known for her cold demeanor and holier-than-thou attitude,
finds herself nursing him back to health... in very intimate quarters.
Their adventures together begin with plenty of excitement and lead to further encounters with rogues, ruffians,
scoundrels, criminals, and murderers. Jordan constructs an interesting and romantic story, which gets off to a very
promising start. The final third of Surrender to Me relies on obvious contrivances, however, to resolve the
various subplots. While Griffin appears to be the kind of man many women dream about, Astrid stays so busy
sabotaging the relationship that it’s something of a mystery why he puts up with her for so long. |
