Too Far Gone
Navy Seals, Bk 6

by Marliss Melton

Divorced mother of three Ellie Stuart was in college and raising her sons alone. Carl Stuart, father of Christopher, nine, Caleb, six, and Colton, nine months, wanted no part of raising any of them. He had never held a job for long, either quitting or, more often, getting fired. He finally left, leaving Ellie and the boys to fend for themselves.

Ellie finally found a house she could afford to rent. With the help of her landlord, Navy SEAL Sean Harlan, she is managing to keep going. Ellie, while carving out a new life for her family, finds herself drawn to Sean Harlan. Harlan, swearing that he would not get involved with Ellie, can’t get her out of his mind. He speaks to his superior officer, who tells him to look up one of the women he used to sleep with so he could forget Ellie. He did, and left for the weekend.

That weekend, Ellie and the boys set out to see Ellie’s sister. On a lonely country road, two strange men stopped them and pulled Ellie from the car. Then, they drove off with her sons. At first, the police thought Ellie planned the kidnapping. Then, they turned their attention to Harlan. No one wanted to question Carl Stuart. Sean Harlan promised to help Ellie find her boys. They would begin with Carl.

Ellie became convinced Carl didn’t plan the kidnapping. But who were the Centurions? And why would they kidnap children he didn’t want for Carl? The answers were there if they could survive long enough to find them.

Too Far Gone is a fascinating look at the dark side of human nature, when greed and the hunger for power take hold in the human soul. Although the characters are people you care about, the author takes away some of their believability by confusing sex with love. One detailed sex scene diluted the otherwise powerful plot, and there is more than one. The profanity was also jarring. If you can overlook these flaws, you’ll find this book delightful. Read Too Far Gone, and judge for yourself.
