Four widows meet on Valentine's Day in Anne Marie Roche's book store. Anne Marie's husband died of a heart attack.
Lillie Higgins' husband was killed in a plane crash along with the husband of her daughter, Barbie Foster. Elise
Beaumont's husband died after a long fight with cancer. They all feel lost and empty. In considering what the
future might hold for them, they begin to think of the things they always wanted to do. So they begin a list of
"Twenty Wishes".
Elise persuades Anne Marie to volunteer at the local elementary school for the Lunch Buddy program. There, she
becomes a Lunch Buddy to Ellen, an 8 year old girl in the 3rd grade. Unforeseen events lead Ellen to become a part
of Anne Marie's life. With this Anne Marie finds her first wish, the love and child she always longed for. Lillie,
Barbie and Elise also realize their fondest wishes in unexpected ways.
This is a heartwarming story of the happiness several women found when they least expected it. The confrontation
between Barbie and Mark, a paraplegic, is stimulating. The feelings between Lillie and Hector, the service manager,
are tender. Ellen is a delightful 8 year old whose attachment to Anne Marie's dog Baxter is endearing.
This is a pleasant easy read with a message of hope and reward for every woman with unfulfilled wishes.
