Under the Highlander’s Spell
Second in the Sinclare Brothers Series
by Donna Fletcher
In the wilds of Scotland, the warrior Artair searches for his missing brother, Ronan. When this search leads him to
a beautiful witch being burned at the stake, he boldly rescues her in hopes that she can lead him to his brother.
The healer, Zia, whose potions revive so many ailing patients that people often suspect her of being a witch, then
promises to lead Artair to her hidden village of healers where Ronan was recently treated for injuries.
Upon visiting her village (and staying in Zia’s cottage with her), Artair becomes more and more smitten with her
enchanting style. He comes to respect her healing methods and vows to protect her from anyone persecuting her for
witchcraft. Although Ronan has already left the tiny village, Artair stays for a few days to question the residents
about his brother’s possible whereabouts. Eventually, he and Zia decide to return to his own clan so they can get
to know each other better, and she can attend to his pregnant sister-in-law. They both feel the chemistry between
them, but want to be sure their feelings are real. For her part, Zia wants to confirm that it’s true love before
committing herself to his offer of marriage, provided as a protection for her against the witch hunters.
Under the Highlander’s Spell casts its own spell over readers. Interesting characters, an intriguing
story, and an air of magic combine in this unusual tale of love. Strangely, the characters speak in language more
often attributed to early Native Americans (and sometimes modern-day Americans) than the early Scottish, but the
story itself fits in with the established time period. While the love scenes appear frequently, they are brief
and light on details, leaving the reader to use his or her imagination to fill in the blanks. |
