Where the Heart Leads:
From the Casebook of Barnaby Adair
by Stephanie Laurens
Penelope Ashford might have been born to wealth, but she had more important things to do than spend her time
making the social rounds with no other purpose than entertainment. Of the small group of women who made it their
business to not only be aware of the seamier side of London, but also do something to change it, she took her
calling the most seriously.
When four boys who were to arrive at her school never make it, she decides she must find out what has happened
to them. When her inquiries bring no results, and indeed were limited by the fact that she is female, she enlists
the assistance of Barnaby Adair, third son of an earl, who has made quite a reputation for himself among the ton
for solving crimes.
Aware of the variety of perils that could have befallen the boys, Barnaby enlists the aid of his friend,
Inspector Basil Stokes of Scotland Yard. Penelope, of course, insists on being involved in the search and Barnaby
does his best to allow her that freedom, while trying to protect her at the same time. Well acquainted with
forceful women, Barnaby finds Penelope more amusing than intimidating, and, very attractive.
Where the Heart Leads is a wonderful combination of romance and mystery, nicely balanced. Typical of
many of Ms. Lauren’s heroines, Penelope is headstrong, forthright, and the perfect match for the indulgent hero.
Where the Heart Leads is another wonderful tale set in mid-19th century England. |
