The Wicked Ways of a Duke
by Laura Lee Guhrke
Prudence Bosworth, girl-bachelor, was firmly entrenched in middle-class reality. She had to work to take care of
herself, but that didn't stop her from having romantic thoughts, or her enjoyment at attending grand balls, even
if she was only the hired help. She hardly expected her romantic dreams and reality to collide when she was on
her hands and knees repairing damage to a lady's ball gown. However, one look from Rhys De Winter, Duke of St.
Cyres and she knows she has met a true knight in shining armor.
St. Cyres was born with the proverbial silver spoon, albeit tarnished, in his mouth. As soon as he is able,
he takes his heritance and squanders it abroad, returning only when he can claim the title, ruined lands and
mountains of debts. The only thing which can save his duchy is marriage to an heiress with a significant fortune.
Once he meets Prudence, he has a difficult time banishing her image as he searches for a wife. If only she had
a fortune.
Prudence's suddenly inherited fortune rescues her from life as a seamstress and elevates her to being the prey
of fortune hunters. St. Cyres may have determined to have Prudence because she could save his duchy, but he soon
realizes she is the only one who can save him from his past.
Ms. Guhrke pens a nice rags-to-riches tale layered with strong emotions and memorable scenes, such as the one
in the lavender house at Winter Park. The characters are so alive in The Wicked Ways of a Duke that you'll
find yourself wanting to cheer or warn them, as the case may be. |
