The Widow

by Carla Neggers

Abigail Browning is an accomplished young Boston Homicide detective who has dedicated her life to her job. Once a year she has a quiet dinner out alone to grieve for the husband she had lost 7 years prior.

While on their honeymoon to the beautiful coast of Maine, Abigail was attacked and knocked out. After finding her and getting help, Chris, her new husband, went off in a rage, leaving the impression that he knew who her attacker was and has gone to confront him. The next morning Chris was found by his best friend, Owen, dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

This year while continuing her habit of dining alone on her anniversary, Abigail receives a mysterious phone call. The phone call hints at a possible solution to the mystery of the identity of Chris's murderer, so Abigail sets out once more to hunt down the person who killed the love of her life.

Upon arriving on the island of Mount Desert, Abby is once more reminded of the fact that this is the place her husband Chris was raised. His family and friends still live here, and though they are cordial, she has never felt like she really fit in.

Soon after arriving, she meets Owen, Chris's closet friend and the man who found Chris's body and gave her the news. With the help of the handsome and well to do Owen, can Abigail hunt down the killer and hopefully live her life in full again?

Carla Neggers does a beautiful job with this book. The mystery is well plotted, taking the reader to the final pages to find the solution. The beautiful scenery of the coast of Maine is well described and makes the reader almost wish for a vacation there.
