The Confidential Life of Eugenia Cooper

by Kathleen Y Barbo

Eugenia Cooper is a young spirited New York debutante, whose one wish is to have a western adventure before she must settle down to a life with the banker her father has selected for her husband. She wants to be like Mae Winslow, the heroine of her favorite dime novels.

Her wish is granted when she learns that the sister of her maid wants to marry but is unable to leave her job as servant caring for the young daughter of a silver baron. Eugenia takes her place and heads for Denver, not Boston as she has told her family. She is pretending to be a servant hired to care for young Charlotte, the daughter of silver baron Daniel Beck. Daniel is a lonely man who is determined never to lose his heart again after being betrayed by his wife and his brother. He is having trouble with the angry miners at his silver mines, which ultimately leads to Eugenia's western adventure. Despite his determination never to love again, Daniel finds himself falling in love with Eugenia (in love with Daniel), which gives her another adventure.

This is an absolutely delightful story. It is entertaining and full of fun, drama and love in a western setting. The characters are likeable and genuine. Eugenia is full of spunk and personality. Charlotte is a child who is easy to love. Daniel is a man with conflicting emotions. The romance between Daniel and Eugenia is exquisite and endearing.

There are excerpts at the beginning of each chapter from the dime novels Eugenia loves to read which narrate the adventures of her heroine, Mae Winslow. The adventures are as spirited as Eugenia's.

This is enjoyable and hard to put down, leaving this reader with a pleasant afterglow.
