Harriet’s Beau
by Emily Johnson
Harriet Mayne has been cursed with two beautiful sisters, a handsome brother and parents who are only interested
in their more attractive offspring. Therefore it is not surprising that she is a sartorial disaster with no polish
and a regrettable mop of red hair at a time when it was not in fashion. What she needs is somebody to take her in
hand—but is notorious rake, Ferdinand Andrews the right person to do it? Time is running out for Harriet,
who has until the end of the season to find a husband or be married off to a ghastly old man.
Surely no Regency writer is quite so much like Georgette Heyer as Emily Johnson, aka Emily Hendrickson, and in
this book it really shows. This is a truly good humored tale with a vastly likeable pair of protagonists and
lashings of Regency atmosphere. Everything shows the work of an author who truly knows her history, without
visibly turning a sprightly novel into a history lesson. If you are somebody who thinks they don’t like this
sort of thing (possibly for some very good reasons) or who wonders what a quintessential Regency novel is like
then I can recommend this. One of my favorites by this author. |
