Twisted
A Sloane Burbank/Derek Parker novel

by Andrea Kane

Sloane Burbank, former FBI agent, trained as a crisis investigator, is now an independent consultant who works with law enforcement when they need her expertise. She was forced to leave the service after a stab wound from a prisoner deprived her of the use of her hand. She is undergoing extensive physical therapy to restore the use of her hand, hoping to return to the FBI.

The mother of a childhood friend asks her to help find her daughter, Penny, who has been missing for a year. There has been no ransom demand and the authorities have had no leads.

Sloane takes on the case and turns to her ex-lover, Derek Parker, who was the agent in charge of Penny's case. Derek is currently busy hoping to catch the murderer of Chinese women working for a Fukinese ganglord, and is trying to avert a gang war between Chinese gangs. He is reluctant to take on the cold case. But as more women disappear who seem to be the target for a vicious serial killer, Sloane and Derek determine that all the murdered women have been involved in Sloane's life. They must find the missing women and the killer, and capture him before he reaches his ultimate target, Sloane.

Twisted is a superb white-knuckle suspense story. The tension is released occasionally by the very heated romantic encounters of Sloane and Derek. The suspense is continual with enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing. There is also interesting information about Sloane's physical therapy.
