The Abandoned Rake
by Emily Harland
Joanna Winterton finds herself a without a fiancé when her father’s choice suddenly dies,
while notorious rake Sir Lucas Montfort gets left at the altar. Both are eager to escape the
wagging tongues of London in the Season, so they are looking for a quiet hideaway until another
nine days’ wonder has the capital agog. But neither of them actually knows the other until
they both happen to take properties in Grasmere. They come to find that they have much in
common, including a mysterious enemy who appears to be trying to kill them!
Emily Harland will be better known to habitués of this site as Emily Hendrickson, or Emily
Johnson. This book shows the reader what a delightful time you could have in the Lake District
in Regency times—even if there is a mystery to solve—as the likeable protagonists
enjoy themselves walking, boating or just admiring the views. Ms Harland has the happy talent
of immersing the reader in the place and time without making a conscious show of all the research
behind the tale. Like all the best Regencies this has a light touch with some humor, a frisson
of danger and, of course, romance as Joanna and Lucas get to know each other. Another winner. |
