Beyond the Night
Awakening Heroes Series, book 1
by Joss Ware
On a caving adventure in Sedona, Dr. Elliot Drake feels the earth shake and then... nothing.
For fifty years he and a handful of friends had been asleep while the world almost ended. When
they wake up, this small group of men finds they have superpowers. Elliot can heal with a touch,
but at a terrible price. The men search for Envy, the last real city in what used to Las
Vegas—now Envy is a coastal town where the human race is trying to rebuild and repopulate.
This little book spends a lot of time focused on those acts that would repopulate earth. I have
to admit, I like my science fiction a little more plot adventure and a little less "let's strip
and shag," but for explicit romance fans—this book definitely has all the romantic action
you'll be looking for.
I enjoyed the basic plot premise—the end of the world plus superheroes (even if the guys
only have one superpower each). Plus, the book offers plenty of evil bad guys—the strangers
who destroyed the world, giant moaning zombies, and the stray bounty hunter or two. That keeps
the studly good guys busy (though never too busy to stop for a bit of sex) as they try to help
the remaining people shake off the yoke of the evil strangers. And Dr. Elliot works to save the
woman he loves. If you like your romance with a side order of apocalypse, this series will make
you sit up and say, "yum"! |
