Bernard Mason had made his fortune in coal mining. He longs to be a member of Regency
society, which abhors anyone connected with "trade". He hopes to help his son, Reginald
advance his position in society and so has purchased an estate adjoining that of the Earl
of Havercroft. The Earl is a top-lofty snob and has forbidden his family and staff from
having any contact with the Masons... or even mentioning their name.
Reginald has aped the behavior of his gentlemen companions. His spendthrift habits
have outraged his father, who gives him the ultimatum to change his habits and marry if
he wishes to inherit. Reginald mentions that Lady Annabelle Ashton has ruined her
reputation by attempting to run off with their coachman. The Earl is in financial
difficulties and must marry his daughter into money. So the hated Bernard proposes
a match between Reginald and Annabelle which would solve problems for both families.
The couple gives the impression that they resent each other. But all is not what it
seems. The couple has a surprise in store for their scheming fathers and for the
readers.
This is a delightful, lighthearted tale of romance in the days of the Regency.
Balogh presents an excellent picture of the attitudes and mores of the society of that
period. My only complaint is that the book is too short. I would like to have read
more about these two families.
Highly recommended.
