Montana Destiny
2nd in the Fool's Gold Trilogy

by R. C. Ryan

Montana Destiny picks up at the end of Montana Legacy (also reviewed on Myshelf) with little lapse of time. The cousins, Wyatt, Zane and Jesse, are still in mourning for their grandpa, Coot McCord, working the ranch and hunting for the lost gold nuggets that gave Old Coot his name and reputation. Jesse is settling into his new situation, Zane is keeping up with the big boys and Wyatt is restless. He sets his sights and his heart on the local paramedic, Marilee Trainor, and is willing to ascend to any height to bring her to ground.

This story is a much more energetic romance than we found in Montana Legacy. Jesse and Amy were at odds a good part of the time, due to old misunderstandings and hurt feelings. They also spent a lot of time hiding their relationship so Amy's father wouldn't find out about it. Not so with Wyatt and Lee. Within minutes of him knocking on her door with a pizza and wine (and tiramisu!) the whole town (with a few typical exceptions) is excited about the young romance. They play together, laugh, love, fly high and even crash; but in the end the family comes together and all is well for everyone back at the ranch.

I was a little disappointed that the treasure hunt didn't move a little farther along as it was my favorite part of the previous story. I do think that there were a couple of major clues dropped along the way, but they are more subtle than "X" marks the spot on the map. For example, I don't think Aunt Cora goes out in the hills just to paint, and it was no coincidence she was available when Lee really needed her to be there.

So is the whole McCord family as crazy as Old Coot? Maybe. I guess we'll just have to find out in November when we read Montana Glory!
