The Promise of Morning
At Home in Beldon Grove - Book II
by Ann Shorey
The Edge of Light (also reviewed
on this site) told the story of Molly McGarvie and her struggles; now it is the turn of Ellie Craig.
Married to preacher Matthew, she has four children to love, but her thoughts constantly turn to
those three whom she has buried. More trials beset the family when the town founder’s son arrives
and tries to take over the church, Ellie finds out a family secret, and Matthew strives to oust a
theatrical troupe from the town.
I love these tales of frontier life, and this is a particularly good series for a number of
reasons. The characters wrestle with their faith in the face of tragedy and other trials in a way
that makes them seem timeless. But they also face many joys and woes that are very of their time,
including quilting, farming, attending church services and coping with high infant mortality. This
is an exciting, pacy book where something of moment seems to happen on almost every page, and
although it is certainly an uplifting and thought-provoking novel for Christians, there is a lot in
here for every reader. A great feeling of the period and place, plenty of good story, interesting
characters in real situations and everything else a good historical novel ought to contain. I hope
this is going to be a long series. |
