Bernadette
Hogan is a bodyguard to Texan self-made millionaire Jeremy Bridges.
Not her first choice for a career, but when Bernie’s mother
needed her help, Bernie left the military for a job best suited
to her skills. For two years, Jeremy had interludes with so many
women that it was only natural Bernie would develop her own fantasy
of making love to him.
Jeremy never lets any woman get too close. Despite his wealth, his
philanthropy, the businesses that keep him busy, past memories prevent
him from settling down. He does, however, appreciate having Bernie
as his bodyguard. She’s great at her job, keeps him on his
toes and even makes him laugh. But when they argue one night and
she tells him that the females he dates are only after his money,
he believes that to be true. When Bernie quits, he taunts her until
she takes control and gives in to her dark desire.
Later, when Bernie realizes she’s pregnant, she confronts
Jeremy, who is surprised when Bernie asks him to sign papers giving
her full custody. Jeremy refuses, for he will not become like his
own dismal father.
Through Jeremy’s attempts to prove that accusation is far
from the truth, he learns that Bernie lives in a run-down apartment
because she’s supporting her mother financially. And over
time, Bernie realizes that Jeremy is not as shallow as she thought.
In fact, he might just make a great father to their unborn child.
Black Ties and Lullabies is a delightful, witty and fast-paced
romance with a humorous, touching plot. I enjoyed the slow revelation
of the characters’ emotional backgrounds, and especially the
developing love and growing respect between Bernie and Jeremy. Jane
Graves has written a heartwarming novel that I will read over and
over again. It’s a definite keeper!
