I truly enjoyed reading this book, not just for the plot, but for the writing. This is one of those books that take you on an emotional journey beyond the mere superficial print on the pages. I think the writing style is reminiscence of To Kill a Mockingbird.

This family drama is set around a west Texas “Boom Town”, Kiowa Falls, in the 1920’s. A pioneer town in the middle of nowhere, the mayor’s daughter, Ru-Marie faces the perils and pitfalls of love with an ordinary man.

Hoggard writes from the third person, setting a tone of intrigue, peering into the life of a family in society’s select fortunate few. It’s a voyager’s visit and the author really helps you to get to know the characters involved in a very intimate way. He invites you into the character’s minds to read their thoughts.

I enjoyed this book very much and it was a relaxing read. I highly recommend this little known book to those who enjoy good classic literature with a modern twist. This Texas author wrote this book out of his own Texas roots and it is evident in the pages. I think you will be pleased you picked this one up. It’s a good one for the bedside table.
