Lady Hero Batten is the sister of the Duke of Wakefield. She is betrothed to the dull and humorless Marquis of Mandeville. However, Hero is content with her life until she meets her soon to be brother-in-law, Griffin Remmington, Lord Reading. Hero thought she had everything she wanted: the proper husband she would soon marry, her work at the children’s home, her place in society. But once she meets Lord Reading, everything begins to change. Hero starts to question her feelings towards her fiancé. Griffin stirs her senses and makes her skin tingle. Just his touch sparks a fire she doesn’t understand. But how can she care for a man who is known for his rakish behavior?

Griffin Remmington, Lord Reading. He has the reputation for being a notorious rake. He lives a life unknown to his family during the day, and spends his nights drinking and behaving badly for all to see. But one night, a woman interrupts him while he’s tupping a married lady and saves him from the lady’s husband. From that moment on, they both agree that they do not like each other. Griffin finds out minutes later that Hero is to be his new sister-in-law but he can’t seem to stay away from her.

Hero and Griffin both have secrets. Those secrets could cost them both. But, their secret passion for each other could cost them everything.

This was my first read of Hoyt’s. I must say I’m hooked. I loved it all: The secrets, the passion, the humor, and the tension between Hero and Griffin. It all made for a great story. One thing that I loved about the story is that it all revolved around a subject that caused a lot of pain and suffering back in that era. The illegal gin stills back then were like the drug problems we have in our country now. Those who suffered the most were the children. That is one of the reasons I love historical novels. You get great stories and at the same time you get a history lesson for that time period. Hoyt did a great job describing what the lower classes were dealing with at that time. I am anxious to read more of Hoyt’s work.
