Rain Jordan and her mother, Ruby, are in York to visit the new museum dedicated to the Viking village of Jorvik, now known as the town of York. Rain spent her childhood listening to her mother’s stories about going back in time and living in this village - - about the Viking, Thork, that her mother said was Rain’s father’s double. - - the man that her mother says is Rain’s biological father. Rain never really believed all the stories. But that day at the museum, Rain sees a tapestry of a great Viking battle: a great field full of nothing but the fallen dead. In the middle of all the death, Rain see a Viking warrior standing and yelling, ready to attack. She is mesmerized by him. She feels all the pain she sees in his face.

That night back in the hotel room, Rain couldn’t sleep. Between the memories of the man in the picture and a migraine, Rain was just too restless. She goes back to the museum to study the picture some more. While there, amidst all the construction, part of it collapses and all goes black. As she begins to awaken, all she can smell is blood and death. When she opens her eyes she finds herself in the middle of that battlefield she had been looking at in the museum. As a doctor and surgeon, the first thing she does is try to find anyone in need of medical attention. And then she sees him: Selik. The Viking warrior her mother had talked about in her stories - - the man in the picture. In his eyes she sees the pain and the rage. Rain knows she must find a way to help him. Can she save this man and herself? Can the two of them save each other and find the passion that is lying just below the surface?

This is the second book in Sandra Hill’s Viking series. Rain Jordan’s mother, Ruby, was in the first, The Reluctant Viking. All of Hill’s best traits are here: her sense of humor, the tortured hero, the history, and a great romance. You can’t help but love it.
