Dean Campbell has an extraordinary ability that drew him to the
Dirk & Steele agency. He can see and sense things that other
cannot. He is an ex-cop who has come to think of the people at Dirk
& Steele as his family. The only other family he'd had died
years ago. That included his one true love, whom he had seen killed
before his eyes.
Dean finds himself in Taipei on the trail of a killer who burns
his victims with a strange fire. At the center of this emerging
power is something that could change the world. After an encounter
with this evil killer, Dean returns to his hotel. To his shock he
sees a woman that looks like his young love who died.
Mirabelle Lee, that woman that Dean loved in his youth, is now an
archeologist working on a dig with her mentor in Taipei. To her,
Dean died that same night that he saw her die. But unknown to each,
both had survived. When she returns to her hotel room, she finds
that she is not alone. A strange man appears and attacks her. From
out of nowhere, Dean breaks into the room. They discover together
that they are both alive. They also discover that the man who attacked
her cannot die. Together they must find the coveted pieces of Red
Jade that the evil powers are after. They must both stay alive if
they are to ever find the love they once shared and save the world
at the same time. They must discover how both of their dilemmas
are interconnected with the killer who Dean is searching for.
Once again I had my nose stuck in the book until the end. Marjorie
M. Liu’s Dirk & Steele novels are all like that. I love
the way that Dean and Miri slowly find out how each other survived,
believing the other was dead. With each other’s help, and
the help of other Dirk & Steele members, Dean and Miri wade
through ancient legends, tunnels, and those out to kill them. Liu
did her usual great job building this story up to its ending climax.
This is book three in the Dirk & Steele series. I have also
reviewed others of this series for MyShelf.com. I highly recommend
this book and the whole series.
