If you have read the Mistress Couplet (both books
reviewed on this site) then you might wonder how the garrulous and
larger than life Angeline Dudley chose quiet, rather stuffy (and
henpecked) Edward Ailsbury for her husband. This is the story of
how they got together. Lady Angeline wants more than a titled man,
wants somebody who is kind and gentle. She likes Edward from the
first time she meets him – he is nothing like her brothers
to start with. And when he saves her from an unwanted suitor, it
seems they are destined for each other. But there is more to it
than that…
Of course we know the outcome of this story, but it is fun reading
about how the pair came together. Angeline is still chatty and a
bit silly, and Edward is still quiet and sensible, so these are
characters that do not change and grow throughout the book. But
as that is what happens in many other books, I am happy with a change,
and thus the emphasis is on other things. Not sex however, apart
from one scene that does not sizzle. If you fancy a gentler, more
relaxing read, then this fits that bill at least.
