Due to a spendthrift
father, Sophie Garnet has no money and no home. Fortunately, she
is companion to the delightful Lady Mary Croscombe, who loves to
travel and who is keen to go with Sophie to hear the reading of
her late uncle’s will. What can Sophie do with her bequest
of Uncle Philip’s library when she has nowhere to store all
the books? But when the books turn out to contain money, and Lady
Mary is willing to sponsor her, Sophie is determined to have a Season
in London and find a husband. But why does Cousin Jason keep turning
up and spoiling everything?
Regency readers familiar with Emily Hendrickson and Emily Johnson
will know to expect a treat. If not, think Georgette Heyer and you
won’t be far wrong, as the novel plunges the reader into a
rags-to-riches story will all the added interest of the Season.
Short of a time machine, this is the only way we have of seeing
the world through the eyes of people two hundred years ago.Reading
a fully researched and well-written tale like this is the next best
thing. Ms Harland really does immerse the reader in the period and
delivers a sprightly story with the right, light touch. The only
alloy in the mix is that Cousin Jason does not come over as being
particularly pleasant, and maybe it is not easy to imagine him making
an ideal husband; he seems rather rude and petty. But people often
complain that romances don’t contain people like those we
meet in real life, so this accusation cannot be leveled here! This
aside, this is just the sort of thing most people think of when
they imagine a Regency romance novel.
