When Kelly Silverthorne loses her first legal case, she heads for
Deer Lick, Montana, to attend her brother Matt's wedding, and "lick"
her wounds. She sees how happy Matt and Emma are, and how her younger
sister Kate is with her hubby, Dean, and feels like a spare tire.
Her past relationships never seemed to gel. Then she sees Deputy
James Harley, a man with whom she shared a night and her cheeks
redden with the memory. They not only gelled - they were hot.
But Kelly is determined to spend time with her family - minus her
mother, who died of a heart attack. Soon after Kelly enters her
mother's ancient Buick, the radio starts playing a Tom Jones song
and Letty Silverthorne's voice fills the back seat. Kelly can't
believe she's talking to her mother's spirit. Kelly doesn't even
believe in spirits. Even so, just as Letty helped Matt and Kate,
she wants to help Kelly through rough times. Their interchanges
are often hilarious and touching.
James has his own inner failures and turmoil. He cares for his rebellious
younger brother and their sick mother, and even his mother's two
Yorkshire terriers. Now that Kelly's back in town, he longs to care
for her as well, but feels he's not worthy.
But Kelly's mother has her own methods for ensuring her daughter's
happiness. A mother knows what's best for her daughter -- even if
her spirit can't leave the Buick.
Somebody Like You is one of the most charming and endearing
romances I have read in a long time. Both Kelly and James have believable
hurdles to overcome, and just might make it, with Letty's help.
This was a feel good novel that had me laughing and crying at the
same time...a totally satisfying read.
