Viscount Lord
Snowden of Westbrooke Manor summons Percy Drummond, his wife's nephew
from Glasgow, to his bedside in Wales. Before Snowden dies, he charges
Percy with a mission dear to the Viscount's heart - one Percy cannot
disclose to family members unless his undertaking is successful.
At the Viscount's death, his wife Katherine becomes estate trustee
until their son, Courtenay, turns twenty-five and inherits the title.
Courtenay, upset at being financially strapped, makes life miserable
for his mother and others on the estate, including the estate trustee,
Steven Muir, whose gentle, nature-loving cousin, Gwyneth, disappeared
years before.
Florilyn, Katherine's daughter, is twenty and engaged to Percy when
the novel opens. She reads a novel by the spiritual author, George
MacDonald, and identifies with the characters in the book. As a
result, she breaks her engagement to Percy, believing he may love
Gwyneth, the caretaker Steven Muir's cousin. Confused but willing
to let God and time determine their future, Percy departs on his
promised mission for the late Lord.
Although this is the second book in the author's Green Hills of
Snowdonia series, Michael Phillips' writing had me hooked from the
very first page. The author's excellent writing and attention to
detail involved me immediately in the period and setting, and especially
the plot. His characters' motivations and emotions were deftly revealed,
including the inner turmoil they each faced. This is a story of
young friends who must overcome personal obstacles in their search
for growth and, eventually, the love they seek. But it is more than
a simple period romance - it's a return to the beauty of classical
writing at its best. Though I have not read the first release in
the Snowdonia series, this book stands on its own as an excellent
and highly recommended read.
First release in the series is Across the Ancient Waters
