Harriet Metcalf
is far too young at twenty-five to be anybody's guardian,
but she has been made one by Sir Benjamin Hayner for his two
wayward twin daughters. She must give them a Season in London
and no expense is spared for this, but when they have been
married off her interest in the money will end. Sarah and
Annabelle are convinced that Harriet is after their money
having none of her own and hate her with a passion. It will
be up to the staff of 67 Clarges Street to make sure it all
runs as smoothly as it ought to
but of course we know that nothing of the kind is going
to happen and we readers will be royally entertained as a
result. This is the third of six novels about the unlucky
house and its staff of servants and as much fun as the others.
Ms. Beaton has the right, light touch for this type of thing
and packs her slim volume with a mixture of romance, humor,
period color and an engaging plot. I love the way these books
are genuinely funny and she manages not to fall into the trap
of many romances of having the heroine behave like a brat
and the hero like an overbearing bully. She often neatly sidesteps
cliché situations and substitutes something more interesting,
another reason of many to read these delightful books. Originally
published back in 1987 this is the first time UK readers have
had the chance to savor romances by this author.
