Max Persault
loves his life aboard his own ship, sailing the seas as a
merchant. The last thing he wants is to have to spend time
masquerading as his cousin Alistair, the new Duke of Haslingfield.
But the Duke has other top secret business that has to be
taken care of, so Max finds himself in route to Cromer pretending
rather amateurishly to be Alistair. What he does not reckon
with is coming up against Miss Constance Church.
This is a most engaging Regency romance, which focuses as
much on Max as it does on Constance. There is always something
going on, whether it is Max's inept and patchy impersonation,
Constance airing her opinions or the various mysterious adventures
which beset the pair and their friends. All the characters
are lively and likeable in some way, and there is as much
escapade as romance. This is a cheerful tale, a proper comedy
or errors as the characters are forced to pretend, form incorrect
opinions of each other and generally cause gossip and mayhem.
I have read several other novels by this author and invariably
find them a cut above the usual Regency romance with solid
knowledge of the period, entertaining plots and a congenial
cast. More please!
