It is now the turn
of the fifth sister Belinda to try and win back the family home
by marrying its current owner. The trouble is Lord St Clair
is a very silly man, obsessed with his clothes and keen on the
idea of getting married. But if he is the owner, then Belinda
is determined that he is the man for her, even if he has a more
handsome and sensible friend called Lord Gyre…
The London Season is the setting for part of this book, where
we get to see the Beverleys on the town. There is also a house
party at Mannerling, which seems more sinister than ever and
even more of a malignant personality. The juxtaposition of merriment
and spookiness made me think that if Ms Beaton ever decided
to write a ghost story it would be rather a good one. As usual
there is much to praise in this short but well-filled novel,
from the description of the Season to the house party guests.
There is much plotting on the parts of various characters, whether
to secure a husband, a house or both and plenty to laugh at.
I’ve read many variations on the theme of a Regency romance
but Ms Beaton really does deserve a sub-genre of her own.
