The Demon
Child Trilogy: Book One
By Jennifer Fallon
Medalon
is that rarity in fantasy fiction, a totally secular land ruled
over by a sisterhood. Two hundred years earlier they expelled the
Harshinui, a semi immortal race that bonded with demons and worshipped
a whole pantheon of deities. Now they are thought to be extinct,
but there are rumors of a Demon Child abroad that need to be crushed,
along with any remaining pagans. Ambitious Joyhinia Tenragan yearns
to be First Sister, and intends to achieve her goal no matter what
she has to do. Her two children R'Shiel and Tarja are about to be
made pawns in her dangerous game, a game that could plunge the whole
continent into war.
In true fantasy tradition this is
a tubby book that forms the first part of the inevitable trilogy.
But this author fills the pages with an exciting story and there
is always something going on. Thrilling escapes, lightening plot
changes, intriguing details about a well-delineated world and even
a dash of humor. At times it becomes a little repetitive that the
protagonists keep getting caught and imprisoned - it seems an inevitable
part of the plot - but this aside there really is quite a fat story
in here. If you like Robert Jordan and David Eddings, you will enjoy
this one and look forward to the next installment, Treason Keep.
