Engines of Destiny
Star Trek: The Next Generation

by Gene DeWeese

One episode from TNG saw Scotty released from seventy-five years in stasis, trapped as a transporter pattern. Technology has moved on, and he finds himself regarded as something of a dinosaur. His beloved captain James T Kirk is dead, and Scotty would do anything to reverse time to enable Jim to live out his life. Anything including going back and changing history - but this leads to himself and others being trapped in a different past where the Borg have already arrived in the Alpha Quadrant, and one of their casualties is Earth...

This is all classic Trek stuff, with plenty of scope for the author to use his imagination and have fun. We learn more about the mysterious Guinan, and for once see her vulnerable and not in charge, and here too is Sarek lending a hand and being truly useful. The only disappointment is that the promised link with the original series' most popular episode "City on the Edge of Forever" (Joan Collins in a soup kitchen) never quite materializes. Apart from that all the featured characters get a good workout and, even though the plotline is hardly new, it is all great fun and a true pageturner.
