Harshini
The Demon Child Trilogy, No. 3
by Jennifer Fallon
With war raging all over the world, it is time for R'shiel to show everybody what the Demon
Child is made of. Now Cratyn is dead, Damin Wolfblade and Adrina are contemplating their
arranged marriage at daggers drawn. Medalon is in Karien hands which is bad enough, but
when Damin comes home with his new bride he soon has a civil war on his hands and a throne
to fight for. Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better...
This one is a real page-turner, epic and intimate in turns. Fans of David Eddings
will enjoy this final part of the trilogy in particular, for the dealings of humans,
Harshini and deities has something of the flavor of his books, cute little gray demons,
gods appearing all over the place and all. I said in my review of the middle volume that
this author is never just content to give her readers a story that treads water or "more
of the same", and each book in the set has a different flavor. This is a trilogy that
ought to have a very side appeal to many different fantasy fans. There are dragons and
plenty of warfare for those into more traditional stuff plus well plotted statecraft and
political machinations for those into fantasy's latest incarnation - Dune style machinations
a la George R R Martin et al. The religious fanaticism of the Kariens continues to imbue
the work with a topical flavor, and the characterization makes this humdinger of a story
live in hearts as well as minds. Do I want to read more of Fallon's work? Yes, and very
soon. |
