Exodus
Star Trek:Vulcan's
Soul Book
by Josepha Sherman & Susan Schwartz
Only a year has passed since the Dominion War ended, and people are picking up the pieces
and forging a tentative peace. But out of the blue, a new species arrives called the
Watraii, masked aliens who state that they are ancient enemies of the Romulans and set
about destroying their colonies. The only person who has hitherto encountered them is
Admiral Chekhov, and he knows too little to be of much use (rather like he was in the
original series). Maybe the answer lies in the distant past, when Surak was leading the
Vulcans away from their warlike tendencies to become the people viewers know and love.
An artefact still remains from those long-ago times, a coronet that records thoughts.
Ambassador Spock is going to be part of a tiny band who will risk court martial to rout
the Watraii.
It is always interesting to find out more about the various alien races that make the
Star Trek world such a fascinating place, and here is an opportunity to find out about
Vulcan's distant past. Most of the book deals with the struggles of Surak and his followers
amid the sands of Vulcan as they try to bring peace to their warring planet. Told in
flashbacks and interspersed with the late 24th century tribulations of more familiar characters,
this is an engaging tale that uses the familiar plot device of an unknown enemy appearing
and laying waste to worlds. This novel will surely be remembered more for the flashbacks,
which bring Vulcan's past to life. I eagerly await the next instalment; let's hope that
something really innovative happens when the goodies engage their new foe... |
