Nightlife
by Rob Thurman
Rob Thurman's first novel is an auspicious beginning for this new author. Nightlife is
a dark fantasy that is borderline horror. It is the story of Cal Leandros, a young man on
the run from his father and his father's people. Cal's half-brother, Niko, has been protecting
Cal from his dear old dad since the old monster had kidnapped Cal. He was a monster in every
sense of the word -an elf. Elves aren't the beautiful golden-haired people humans think they
are. In addition to the pointy ears, they are ugly, with sharp, pointed teeth and long, sharp
claws. They kill humans just for the fun of it. And they want Cal back!
Cal didn't remember where he had been taken or what had happened to him while he was there.
He only knew he was thirteen when he was taken, and that he was gone two weeks -Earth time- but
he was fifteen when he got back. And he never, ever, wanted to go back there. That had been
four years ago. They had settled in New York City for two years, but now they'd been found
again. This time it was too late to run.
Neither Cal nor Niko knew that elves weren't the only paranormal life forms in the city.
Add a Boggle in Central Park, a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a vampire in a penthouse
and the friendship of Robin Goodfellow and things got rapidly worse. But Cal's real worst
enemy was the one in the mirror.
Nightlife is a book I found hard to take, but hard to put down. The foul language
detracted from a superb plot. The violence is graphic, but the story wouldn't be the same
without it. Just keep in mind, this is a work of fiction. I must say that Thurman's descriptions
are a lesson for every writer. Pick up Nightlife and truly take a walk on the wild side. |
