Tales
From The Captain's Table
Star Trek
Edited by Keith R A DeCandido
Somewhere out of space and time is a very special bar. It is a bar that people can only
go to if they hold the rank of captain on a star ship, and it is accessible in every period
and wherever you look for it. The bartender, Cap, always knows what his customers want
to drink and the beverages are all free...for the price of a story. This is a delicious
idea in my opinion, and this is not the first book to contain a series of stories told
by various captains from all four series, and some of the books.
Short stories are not much to my taste normally, but this is a good selection ranging
from the sad to the comical. Read about Kira's early days in the Bajoran resistance (well,
what story did you think she would tell?) Chakotay's doomed friendship with Blue Water
Boy and his decision to join Starfleet. Find out what happened on Riker's honeymoon and
learn about Demora Sulu's relationship with her grandmother.
It is always good to discover more about the characters, and here are some illuminating
stories shedding a very believable light on them. As ever, the writers appeared more at
home with the 23rd to 24th centuries, and the tale about Captain Archer's dog was the
weakest entry just as the series was the weakest Star Trek incarnation. What I would have
enjoyed is to have had a couple of stories told by alien captains from races we don't know
so much about (but not a Vulcan or a Klingon.) Getting a better-rounded picture of Orion,
Cardassia or perhaps pre-occupation Bajor would have been a rare treat. |
