Mortal Coils

by Eric Nylund

Nothing exciting ever happened to Eliot Post and his twin sister, Fiona. And it seemed as though that was never going to change. For fourteen years their lives had been ruled by their grandmother, great-grandmother, and the list of 106 rules posted on their bedroom doors. They never left home except to go to the pizza shop where they worked. And after work, all that awaited them was Grandma's homework assignments. They never did anything fun. Is that the way life would always be?

The changes start the day before their fifteenth birthday. It is subtle at first, but things rapidly escalate as the twins discover who their parents really are. With a goddess for a mother and Lucifer for their father, the custody battle that ensues becomes a life-and-death struggle. In a series of action-packed trials, the twins must prove themselves worthy to belong to each family.  But the balance of the entire world belongs to the victor in this ultimate struggle between good and evil.

Author Eric Nylund has created an exciting adventure filled with twists and turns as the twins try to negotiate their way through their fantastical new lives. As they learn to use their supernatural powers, Eliot and Fiona must decide whose side they want to wind up on. As a reader, I found myself hesitating right along with them, for both sides present persuasive arguments.  The ending is... well, the perfect ending.  When you read Mortal Coils, you'll see what I mean.
