Succubus in the City
by Nina Harper
Meet Lily. She works as the editor of a fashion magazine in New York, and lives the
perfect chicklit life, with plenty of gossipy girlfriends and shopping for shoes. But this is
just on the surface; actually she is a three thousand year old succubus, whose real job is
working for the Devil and feeding him the souls of men she has seduced. This life is starting
to get old, and she is after a relationship with more commitment than a fatal one-night stand.

If you are a fan of the new wave of urban fantasy, like chick lit and shows like Sex in
the City, then this is probably the book for you. If you don’t then leave well alone, for
this is a good description of it and as such it is a good example of the genre. Lily has an
interesting and well developed back-story, and the supernatural side of the tale balances out
with the more mundane aspects such as shopping, moaning about men and other girlie chat. I
came away from it thinking that it was a well realized and highly descriptive novel, but one
which lacked a strong plot and much in the way of action. If there is a sequel (and it seems
likely) and these are addressed, this should shape up as an appealing series with plenty to
interest a range of readers. |
