This is the first book in a new series by the master of epic fantasy. Imagine a wizard
who calls forth demons, and then charges the reigning leaders with sending these same demons
back where they came from. What a way to make a living—until the demon fights back,
and has a few magic tricks and spells of his own. The demons used to be a mindless horde,
predictable and manageable, but now it seems they have group structure and leadership, with
a dark power.
Meanwhile, a rift away, we meet the Elven Laromendis and Gulamendis, demon masters of
the elven taredhel, the branch that had fled Midkemia before the Valheru, Ashen-Shugar had
given them freedom. Now their millions have become thousands under the onslaught of the
Dread Legion. Ten years after the cataclysmic events of
Wrath of a Mad
God (book III in the Darkwar Series) took place, Midkemia now faces a new danger.
This lost race of elves, the 'people of the stars,' have found a way across the universe to
reach Midkemia. On their current world, these elves are being decimated by a horde of demons.
Now they are convinced that Midkemia is their lost home, and they are coming to reclaim it.
Sandreena is a spirited Knight-Adamant heroine sent to investigate the dark summoning and
wholesale slaughter of villagers around Akrakon. She finds herself mixed up in more than
she bargained for, but with great effort, manages to carry out her assignment.
Pug and the Conclave realize that it's not the elves, but the demons pursuing them where
the true danger to the people of Midkemia lies.
This is a new chapter in Medkemia's history. The narrative is tense, the good versus
evil plot is tightly focused, and the interplay between characters is mesmerizing. I am not
usually a fantasy reader, but Feist is a master at characterization and plot, and his brand
of storytelling could become addictive. I may have been missing a lot of very entertaining
reading. Many characters from previous Feist novels appear in Rides a Dread Legion,
and fans will welcome them back. This is number one in a new series and volume two
At the Gates of
Darkness, is on my list of must-read books.
