The Dame
Saga of the First King, Book Three
by R.
A. Salvatore
Bransen Garibond has been away from home long
enough. He misses his beautiful wife, Cadayle, his home and
his peace. For him, the rest of the world and their schemes
and wars were of no importance. He had finished his mission,
and as soon as he collected his reward, the rest of his life was his
to live as he chose.
His mission was no small feat. He and his friends were to go
into the frozen north, territory held by members of a religious group
called the Samhaists. These warrior priests controlled the northern
trade routes and wanted it them all in order to force everyone into
their cult. The ancient, as they called their leader, was becoming
very aggressive. Dame Gwydre of Vanguard had blackmailed Bransen
Garibond, the Highwayman, into stopping Ancient Badden. He deposited
the ancient’s head at the dame’s feet. Instead of
his freedom, he found more trouble and only a brief rest before he
had to clear himself of murder charges.
Though The Dame stands alone as a novel, it is much more
enjoyable when read with the rest of the series. It has everything
a good fantasy needs, : magic -, both good and bad, great characters,
power-hungry men locked into a war neither can win, innocents caught
in the middle, and exotic cultures that are fascinating. And,
of course, two churches, ; one greedy and violent, the other powerful
and kind. The characters aren’t all cardboard cutouts,
though some seem to be evil with no redeeming qualities. The
battles are authentic in that there is no limit to the variety of
terrains on which they’re fought. The weapons are primitive,
the deaths brutal. And there is romance along the way.
So check out this series. It’s worth your time.
