The Waters Rising

By Sheri S. Tepper

The “Before Time”: A time when some of mankind used technology in an attempt to destroy those who didn't think the same way they did. The “Big Kill”: A race known as The Slaughterers killed off most of mankind. Those who survived were scattered to different corners of the earth. Earthquakes and other natural disasters changed the face of the planet. Now, the waters are rising. Towns must move to higher levels. The seas are threatening to flood the earth once again.

Xulai is a girl from Tingawa assigned to aid Xu-i-lok, a Tingawan princess, as her soul carrier. Once the princess dies, Xulai will carry her soul back to Tingawa, her homeland. With her new friend, Abasio, and her protectors, Precious Wind and Bear, Xulai starts her long journey home. However, the journey is a dangerous one. There are those who want to destroy Xulai and prevent her from returning home. These include an evil Duchess, Alicia, with a grudge against the princess, and an evil slaughterer who wasn't destroyed with the others. The people of this earth live as ours did back in the medieval times. They are simple people with simple lives. But, not all is as it seems.

This is the first book of Tepper's that I have read. It is quite an intriguing story. It has that scifi/fantasy feel to it. As you get into the story you begin to realize that there are similarities to how this earth and humanity runs with the earth in the story. There are a few surprises throughout and an interesting ending. Tepper has definitely made it to my top ten list of authors; she has quite the imagination. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I can't wait to read more. I definitely recommend this book.
