Among Thieves is an interesting book. I have not read many Fantasy novels, but I found this one fun to read. I have to say this probably isn’t your typical fantasy book. Douglas Hulick takes an intense story and adds a little bit of humor to it. The lead character, Drothe, works for a crime lord in the mythical city of Ildrecca tracking down thieves and murderers. The opening scene, although graphic is not gory, and Drothe’s character is quickly revealed in his wit. While that is a story in itself, Hulick adds intensity when Drothe soon discovers a relic more important than his average kill-or-be-killed job. Drothe must shatter this underworld to survive, which adds a more sinister dimension to the story.

I opened this book with trepidation and found myself being sucked into the plot. I think this book will mystify and surprise many readers. If you like fantasy with an added dose of intrigue and humor mixed into the p(l)ot, you will enjoy this one. Drothe brings to mind Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp in the lead role; lighthearted and exciting all rolled into one. I think Hulick will create a following for successful sequels to this one.
