Jim Butcher brings us an anthology of short stories featuring Harry
Dresden, Private Investigator and Wizard. It included the very first
Harry Dresden story. Though amateurish in itself, it shows the promise
of greatness that we see in Butcher’s current writings. In
this story, Dresden goes after a ten-year-old runaway whose parents
promised him and his partner twenty-five thousand dollars if they
brought her home safely. About the time they found her, her parents
reported that she had been kidnapped.
Other stories cover Dresden trying to take down a deadly group of
Black Court vampires. This involves help from his brother, Thomas,
a White Court vampire. He also rescues a young bride from a monster.
That was a novella, as was the last story on the disk. That last
story covered what appeared to be Harry Dresden’s murder.
But Murphy never believed the seemingly indestructible wizard had
died, no matter what the lab guys said. However she and the werewolves
agreed to keep Dresden’s tradition of doing the right thing
and helping people who couldn’t help themselves fend off the
very real monsters that preyed on them until Harry returned. They
promptly got in over their heads.
I sincerely hope to read more stories from The Dresden Files, as
the first book about this remarkable wizard was titled. Harry is
a humble wizard, having no illusions about his limitations. Still,
he manages to pull off some remarkable things in an emergency. The
plots are riveting, and keep moving from one narrow escape to the
next with a speed that keeps you awake and interested until the
end.
So, listen to these fascinating tales of courage and magic. You
won’t want to stop.
