Harris
and Kelner offer fantasy readers both new and familiar characters
in their school-theme anthology. I cannot read an anthology in order.
In fact the only time I do is when it’s one storyline with
many writers. As I do with anthologies I thumbed through the table
of contents for familiar names. I spotted Rhys Bowen /Stephen Hockensmith
(historical mystery authors) and Marjorie M. Liu (Fantasy author)
and began to read… I was happy to discover (new to me anyway)
Thomas E Sniegoski. What I found in reading this anthology is going
back to school has never been weirder or more entertaining. And
this may be a back to school theme but the publisher’s timing
makes it great Halloween read, too. My advice to you - if you do
read this book - is don’t read it you have to go to school
the next day... because you never, never know…. BRWHAHA.....
Ruth
is coming. --Sympathy for the Bones by Marjorie
M Liu
The story is told in first person by young Clora.
Ruth teaches with needle and thread and slender bone daggers…
Her magic doesn’t heal, it kills. And Clora is her apprentice….
It’s a dark tale with characters living a bleak life. The
story is dramatically written. I took in each word… I wanted
the victims to escape… It’s the best story in the book…
Kinney
Kennels and Obedience School -- The Bad Hour
by Thomas E Sniegoski
Jackie Kinney receives a warning (Beware the Bad
Hour) so she seeks out Remy Chandler (Angel turn human) of Chandler
Investigations. Remy takes his partner, Marlowe, a Labrador retriever
back to school. Marlowe doesn’t want to go and he thinks Jackie
is scary. Dogs have a good sense of things… It’s a paranormal
story about owners who love their pets. Even Remy discovers he has
a soft spot for Marlowe. The light-hearted banter between the main
characters made this story less dark than others.
Where
are your two number-two pencils, properly sharpened?
-- Low School by Rhys Bowen
Amy Weinstein goes back to school where halls are
dark and bullies rule. Looking chubby and poorly dressed (again)
Amy is looking for Six Hundred Hall, room Six Hundred and Sixty
Six to take an exam. She runs into Goth Chicks, scary teachers,
a nasty bathroom – and, eww, the lunch room. Poor Amy is headed
for a dark, dark discovery… It certainly took me by surprise.
"Robert’s
back," she whispered. – An Introduction
to Jewish Myth and Mysticism by Steve Hockensmith
Professor Mossler is dealing with an abusive ex-husband.
Professor Abrams has an idea….. With each “time stamp”
I thought What? How? By the end not only did I get it, I read it
again.... Great short story.
Every author
brings his or her imagination to life, just for us… We are
very lucky readers.
