Rachel Morgan is officially a demon -- which is causing her nothing
but headaches. She can't get a driver's license, for one thing.
And on the day she tries, she finds the cold bureaucratic attitudes
suddenly change when she's hustled in to meet a very old vampire
inhabiting a young woman. The vampire pulls Rachel into a case involving
humans with a hideous agenda that leaves a trail of mutilated and
tortured witch corpses in its wake. Because Rachel has voluntarily
dulled her new demon powers, she faces this new problem at the weakest
point of her life -- and pays the price for it.
This is the third Hollows book that I've read and I'm always struck
by how accessible this series is -- you can step in at any book
and quickly find your feet in the interesting world of Rachel Morgan.
I also liked having the "big bad" as human. Sometimes
it's good to be reminded that it's hard to find a more unhinged
evil than what ordinary people can provide with the right dose of
fanaticism. Plus, the book worked as a stark reminder of just how
"neutered" Rachel had become -- she got her butt repeatedly
kicked by some relatively nutty humans. I enjoyed the book (though
Rachel Morgan sometimes needs a smack to get her to think a little)
and found it a quick read. As guilty pleasures go, The Hollows series
is quite pleasurable indeed.
