Detective Kara Gilligan is part of a supernatural task force in Lousiana. She's also a Summoner -- she can summon demons to help her solve cases. That's the good part. She's also sworn to serve a powerful demonic lord who has upset some heavy hitters in the demonic realm. Plus, someone is trying to make her look like a murderer. But the stakes may just be a lot bigger than she ever expected. This is the third book featuring Kara Gilligan, so there's a little catching up to do, but it's smooth and easy.

There's plenty here that fans of romantic paranormal novels will recognize
-- a bright quippy main character with endearing quirks and a complicated love life. A cast of smoking hot nonhumans. And a problem that just grows and grows. Still, Diana Rowland handles these familiar elements with fun and style. I especially enjoyed the character of Kara's demon bodyguard, Eilahn, who wants to experience all the important things she can about being human while she can -- like pet ownership and Christmas lights. The humor of the book is a nice tension release for the darker moments, and I definitely didn't guess the bad guy way ahead of time. So for those who like their paranormal romance heavily seasoned with police procedural -- this is a tasty mix that made me want to go looking for the first two books in the series.
