In this compelling sequel to The Clockwork Dagger, magical healer Octavia Leander and assassin Alonzo Garrett are on the run because Octavia is the most powerful healer alive and everyone wants her. Some want her dead. Some want to use her. But Octavia has her own agenda. She wants to discover the reasons behind her power and behind a troubling ailment that afflicts her. To learn the answers, she must go to the Lady's Tree in the middle of the harsh lands known as the Waste. The journey is far from easy and the sacrifices demanded are positively heartbreaking. I'll admit, this book made me cry more than once - and yet, I couldn't put it down. I had to find out what happened with Octavia's quest. Although Alonzo has a small role than in the first novel, his side plot yields once of the most moving moments of the whole novel. Overall, I found it a powerful adventure story with themes of duty and sacrifice that linger long after the last page.
