Saker, Ardhi, Sorrel and baby Piper have a mission that must
be completed; return the stolen plumes to the Spice Islands.
Meanwhile back in the Va-Cherished lands a sinister army is
taking over who appear to only look human, a villain has second
thoughts and Prime Fox is perhaps not all he seems.
Just like the first part of this series this one hits the
ground running. I’ve read most of this author’s
work and can say that this is her best yet; standard epic
fantasy but with plenty of thought behind the world building
and a lot of action. By action I don’t just mean fighting,
but characters being thoroughly put through their paces and
getting a chance to grow and change. There are plenty of surprises,
some new characters and the whole tale manages to avoid that
middle book problem and does a lot more than tread water.
I love the way this author has taken stock characters: rebel
priest, princess, sorcerer etc. and imbued them with a life
of their own. It is not a gritty read filled with shocks,
sex and violence happen mostly offstage but thrilling, fun
and replete with characters you can really care what happens
to. Every now and again I like to remind myself why I started
reading fantasy, and this series has made me fall in love
with it all over again.
