In this fourth book in the series,
Nola O'Grady and her partner, Ari Nathan are hunting two vicious
criminals who are moving through the multiverse with some
convoluted plot tied to religious fanatics who may be connected
to the Peacock Angel Chaos cult. Sound confusing? It was.
This is my second visit with this series and each book really
does not stand alone as the books are pulling a number of
different plot threads slowly along. I found the pacing of
this book frustrating as Nola and Ari make plans and *almost*
act several times, but some random event stalls them. The
plot felt a bit aimless as a result, as if the author was
trying to avoid moving too many plot thread forward but still
putting them before the reader in these stalled actions. The
real point to this installment seemed to be Nola and Ari working
out parts of their relationship. Ari wants to get married.
Nola does not -- ever. Various bits of plot jump in to make
Nola think about how awful and confining marriage is, while
making it harder and harder for Ari to deal with the lack
of real commitment from her. I love the whole premise of the
multiverse and different worlds that have diverged -- each
being some unique version of the universe we know -- but I
found this particular installment in the series slow and frustrating.
I would heartily recommend beginning this series from the
first novel and seeing this one as one more step forward (and
probably an important step once we have the whole series complete)
but this installment really doesn't work nearly as well as
a stand-alone.
