In this fifth novel in the series,
Esther Diamond is working as Driedel, the Jewish elf, at a
landmark department store in Manhattan. Unfortunately, the
skimpy costume and crowds aren't the worst part of the job
-- the worst part are the demonic attacks that animate various
holiday displays, making them attack customers and staff.
As if that's not enough, Esther's cop near-boyfriend Lopez
turns up at the scene, investigating possible mob action against
the store. The chemistry between Esther and Lopez are sizzling
hot as always, even though he doesn't buy into the supernatural
-- at all. So Esther and a miss-matched gang of supernatural
evil-busters have to swing into action before an ancient demon
does more than scare kids and wreck a few displays. The author
does a great job mixing humor into the plot as Esther constantly
finds herself in escalating situations when all she wants
to do is make her mark as an actress. Though the book never
quite crosses the threshold into scary, it is witty and fast-paced
and fun. I enjoyed every moment.
