Spells
at the Crossroads is a two novel set in one, combining Spellcast
and Spellcrossed. Together, they follow the romance between
Maggie Graham and the mysterious Rowan Mackenzie. Maggie is
a young woman adrift and looking for her place. The only thing
she's ever really enjoyed was summer theater, but that's the
one place her mother never wanted her to go. So when Maggie
wanders into the Crossroads Theatre in Vermont and somehow
ends up cast in the summer productions, she decides to keep
her summer activities secret. And she soon finds that the
Crossroads is a magical place, in more ways than one. I enjoyed
the authors rich personal experience with the theater and
the realism that brings to a very dreamy book. The characters
all felt well drawn with the possible exception of Maggie's
romantic lead, Rowan. In the effort to keep him mysterious,
he felt a little weak to me and sometimes a bit annoying.
And some of the magical choices were a little too weird for
me, throwing me out of the story. The humor added a nice touch
and the story is compelling all the way through both books.
Neither book is fast paced, but if you enjoy a slow build
with some laugh out loud moments, this one won't disappoint.
